Sundials, shadow of time In a period of quartz watches, computers and atomic clocks just two functions for sundials remain: an historic or new decorative ornament and a scientific hobby for the practitioners of the gnomonica, the knowledge and study of sundials. A quotation from Samuel Beckett "Comme le temps passe quand on s'amuse' on a sundial in Hasselt shows very well the psychological dimension of time, also the meaning of this hobby. Sundials are more then just simple instruments for measuring time. They bring science, art and philosophy together in a discourse concerning time.  Sundials have their history but they are also symbols of history itself. Due to their construction and their symbolism, they are "shadows of time." In Limburg (Flanders), there are over one hundred unique sundials of various types and quality. The most remarkable are those of the  Sundial Park in Genk. Visit this site to find the sundials in Limburg. They are pieces of heritage from yesterday and today.
